Our brief stated that our product design must aid in the promotion of a selected brand; my brand was Meccano. With a toy company which specialises in construction and educational toys, I hoped to be able to design a product which was highly ergonomic whilst adding a subtle hat-tip to the company's well-known product image.
I took a holistic approach into viewing the company, Meccano; highlighting their products as easy to use, and wanted a product that could just snap or slide together without complication, therefore I fixated on the concept of a sliding mechanism to remove the razor head for disposal. In one of the initial designs, rendered below, I had a concept that focused on Meccano's 5 Length Connecting Strips, and used the drilled holes as curved circular grips for support and comfort whilst shaving. After 3D printing a 1:1 resin prototype, I quickly found that the bobbled edges looked great but lacked a comfortable grip when I tried shaving my neck - inverting the razor handle made the handle difficult to grip and the process of shaving overall...awkward. I began focusing designing a razor that had more than two grip points so that the user could shave with the handle inverted, held by the head, with and index finger along the ridge, or simply in the hand. I started by looking at how men held their razors differently and eventually discovered a design that suited my target market's anthropometrics; was ergonomically pleasing and subtly complimented Meccano's renowned product-line. |
